BROCKTON, MA - Brockton starter RHP Wayne Lundgren dazzled a Campanelli Stadium crowd of 4,667 and dealt hit second complete-game shutout of the season as the Rox defeated the Worcester Tornadoes, 3-0, on Friday evening in the City of Champions.
Lundgren, who now leads the league with five complete-game efforts for the year, allowed seven hits with six strikeouts while walking none. He threw 108 pitches over the full nine innings in improving his record to 6-5.
Brockton scored the only run it would need in the first inning when Worcester starter RHP Ryan Quinn walked four of the first five batters he would face. DH Jud Thigpen earned an RBI with the fourth walk with the bases loaded. RF Keith Brachold drove in the other two runs for the Rox with a run-scoring double in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh.
Quinn labored through five full innings for the Tornadoes, allowing two earned runs on two hits with five strikeouts and eight walks. He threw the same number of pitches, 108, as Lundgren in four fewer innings and falls to 0-2 on the season.
For the Rox, Lundgren is the second Australian starter to throw a complete-game shutout this week as LHP Craig Anderson went the full nine innings in an 8-0 victory over New Jersey on Wednesday night. The offense could have made the margin of victory larger, but 11 runners were left on base throughout the course of the night, including leaving the bases loaded twice.
Game two of this series is set for Saturday night at 6:05 PM. It will be RHP Freddy Flores (3-2, 4.32 ERA) on the hill for Brockton against Worcester's Chris Farley (4-2, 3.14).
